The unofficial holiday takes place every May 28, timed to kick off summer with a fun Memorial Day Weekend barbecue. Hamburgers originated in Hamburg, Germany (hence the name), but the item Americans now know as the classic patty on a bun is thought to have been invented in Seymour, Wisconsin, which calls itself “Home of the Hamburger.”

McDonald’s: The classic. You can get two Big Mac burgers for just $5 at McDonald’s. The chain launched its “McPick 2 for $5” deal this week just in time for National Burger Day. Your options include the Big Mac, the Filet-O-Fish and a 10-piece Chicken McNuggets.
