For those unversed, National Cheese Pizza Day, which falls on Sept. 5, celebrates the cuisine that a majority of Americans love to snack on.

After all, NYC is known as the official home to pizzas in the U.S.

Cheese pizza is a quintessential part of the U.S. culture now but it is a descendant of its ancient variant which was made in the Green Port city of Naples, Italy, in the 6th Century BC. Pizza got its name from the Greek word "pektos" which translates to "solids." While this delicious food has its roots in Italy, it started gaining traction among Americans in the late 1800s. Interestingly, it was not until Gennaro Lombardi kickstarted Lombardi's that pizza became a household name here.
