Chocolate-rich desserts have the power to brighten up anyone's mood on a gloomy or stressful day. For those who like little chocolaty surprises in every bite, they may opt for treats that come with chocolate chips — the drop-shaped morsels of chocolate that can make almost every cookie recipe stand out. They can be used to take cakes and even pancakes to a whole new level, too.

It is believed that chocolate chips were accidentally invented in Whitman, Massachusetts, in 1938. Ruth Graves Wakefield reportedly wanted to bake some chocolate cookies. However, instead of mixing chocolate with what she was making, she decided to throw chunks of a chocolate bar into it. In the end, the chocolate cookies didn't lose their shape. The chocolate chunks didn't melt and mix with the rest of her cookies, either. The happy accident then gave birth not just to chocolate chips but also to its namesake dessert — chocolate chip cookies.

Considering the versatility of chocolate chips and how much people from all walks of life love them to this day, it is no longer a surprise that there's a holiday devoted to celebrating these tiny bits of chocolate. Observed on May 15 every year, the occasion is called the National Chocolate Chip Day.
