For more than 170 years doughnuts have been delighting fans the world over. Friday’s national doughnut day and what better way to celebrate everyone’s favorite baked or fried treats by whipping up a batch — or several batches — at home.

Doughnuts may seem ambitious to a novice baker, but they’re truly easy to make. Traditional yeast doughnuts require bread flour, yeast, sugar, salt, milk, vanilla extract, eggs and butter. Top them off with a simple sugar glaze and you’ve got a crowd pleasing treat for breakfast, dessert or anything in between.

Cake-style doughnuts, which require a blend of flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, nutmeg, eggs, milk and butter, can be equally easy to make. Baking them will require a special pan. They can be fried, which yields and equally delicious, albeit possibly imperfectly shaped, result.

Less ambitious doughnut-lovers can head to certain retailers for free treats. Participating Dunkin Donuts retailers are giving away a free classic doughnut with the purchase of any beverage all day long. Some Krispy Kremes, Shipley Do-Nuts and more are offering free doughnuts at participating locations as well.
