The countdown for the weekend has officially begun, but this Friday marks a special time. It’s National Drink Beer Day! It’s the time of year dedicated to raising your glass and celebrating the oldest alcoholic beverage around.

Although there here isn’t much history surrounding the origins of this boozy holiday, there are plenty of facts about beer. While the sole creator of the drink is not known, the first production of the barley-based beverage was made by the Sumerians of ancient Mesopotamia more than 5,000 years ago, according to History.

Despite the lack of information on this particular holiday, it has garnered enough attention that people remember to raise their glass and toast to the beverage every Sept. 28.

In honor of this alcohol based holiday, check out these 5 fun ways to celebrate National Drink Beer Day.

1. Celebrate At Home

After a long day at work, there’s no shame in heading home to chill out on the couch with a bottle or can of your favorite brew. Luckily, there are a variety of brews on the market, and Friday would be the perfect day to broaden your taste buds by trying out a new beer in the comfort of your own home.

Goose IPA: Crafted with the traditional English Style in mind, this smooth IPA features bright citrus aromas with a bold hop finish. Goose Island also produces a variety of other brews including Pilze, Scavenger and Paper Umbrella.

Wicked Weed Pernicious: Founded in 2012 by Walt and Luke Dickinson, the brothers created this flagship dry-hopped ale that features a heavy resinous of American hops as well as a combination of juicy, tropical fruit-forward hops. Wicked Weed has since expanded its ales which now includes La Bonte Pear, Barrel Aged Xibalba, Recurrant and Metatropics.

Four Peaks Kilt Lifter: Based in Tempe, Arizona, the company dedicated to creating classic and traditional beer, created the perfect solution to the end of summer with its flagship brew. Embrace the crisp fall days with this full-bodied ale that features distant flavors of roasted barley and caramel. Four Peaks’ other brew styles include Golden Lager and Pumpkin Porter.

2. Visit A Brewery

If you’re at a bit of a loss as to how to celebrate a day dedicated to enjoying beer, consider learning more about the creation process. Taking a tour of a brewery is a great way to learn more about beer and in some cases, it’s an opportunity to sample a variety of drinks.

Four Peaks Brewery Tour

Beer lovers of New York can carry their National Drink Beer Day celebration into the weekend by heading to the Four Peaks 8th Street Brewery. Every Saturday, a tour is led by an experienced Four Peaks guide that offers curious minds an in-depth look into the history of operations and brewing process.

Breckenridge Brewery Tour

Inhabitants of the Colorado area have the option of taking their celebration to the Breckenridge Brewery. Those who make their way over to the Littleton production brewery to take one of the tours running Thursday through Monday at 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. local time, will not only receive a guided tour through the brewhouse, but they will also receive a generous sampling of the finished products.

A simple online search of “Local Breweries” will give you a list of brewhouses in your area.

3. Happy Hour

If you’re not up for a big adventure, you can head to your local bar for a few happy hour specials. Seeing as beer is typically the cheapest thing on the menu, not only will you get to enjoy an ice cold beverage, but you’ll be allowed to do it at a discounted rate.

4. Make Your Own Beer

Booze makes the perfect present but why not gift yourself with a tasty glass of your very own brew? Stores like William Sonoma, Bloomingdales, Home Depot, Crate and Barrel and other popular chains sell beer kits with detailed instructions. Not only will you learn how to create your own personalized brew, but the easy experience may just introduce to your new weekend hobby.

5. Non-Alcoholic Celebration

While beer may be among the most popular adult beverages, not everyone one is a fan. For those of you who prefer to skip drinking beer but still want to participate in the celebration, there are a variety of non-alcoholic beer options. Root beer, ginger beer and birch beer are great alternatives, but if you can tolerate the taste of traditional beer, there are an array of mock brews on the market. Described as having little or no alcohol content, non-alcoholic beers offer thirsty patrons the opportunity to quench their thirst with a cold brew without risking overindulgence which could result in a serious hangover.

Cheers to National Drink Beer Day! Be sure to drink responsibly during your celebration.
