National Friendship Day falls on the first Sunday of August, and is marked to celebrate the special bond that helps people strive forward.

It is not only a day to rekindle your bonds with your old friends, but also an opportunity to make new friendships.

National Friendship Day was first established by Hallmark in 1919 as a day for people to celebrate their friendship by sending each other cards. However, the celebrations slowly died out.

The United Nations then declared July 30 as International Friendship Day in April 2011. But, most countries continue to celebrate the occasion on the first Sunday of August.
