Pretzels are one of the notable foreign-born snacks to have found a special place in the U.S., and, unarguably, the tastiest of its kind to achieve that feat.

The knot-shaped crust sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon is majorly known for its distinctive aftertaste and crunchy texture. To honor the mouthwatering culinary masterpiece ever, April 26 is designated as National Pretzel Day.

There is no definitive proof of where pretzels first originated. Many experts link their invention to the 12th-century German bakers, and, at the same time, a few others believe that an Italian monk invented the pretzel in 610 AD to reward little children for memorizing their prayers.

There is another working theory that the pretzel originated from a French monastery, where it bore a special religious significance. Some reports, however, have positively concluded that pretzels were first introduced in the 19th century to the United States of America by the Pennsylvania Dutch immigrants. Considering the fact, the first proclamation of National Pretzels Day was made in Pennsylvania on April 26, 2003, to pay tribute to the sweet and salty snack.

To mark the occasion, below are some quotes that prove the cinnamony confections are too good to resist. (Courtesy: A to Z quotes)
