The special day that falls on the third Saturday in October was created in 1921 in Cleveland, Ohio, by confectioner Herbert Birch Kingston and originally named “Sweetest Day of the Year.”

On this day, Kingston formed a committee and brought more than 20,000 small gifts and chocolates to orphans, the elderly the poor and more.
