India’s national team captain claims he could beat Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi but probably not in soccer.
Sunil Chhetri is regarded as one of the best soccer players India has ever produced. He had led his country successfully to new heights in the international soccer scene. Overtime, Chhetri has progressed into a smart leader and prolific goalscorer. In fact, he is the second all-time leading goalscorer among all active male players. After Ronaldo with 99 international goals, Chhetri comes next with 72 to surpass Messi’s tally of 70.
But another interesting thing about Chhetri is his wit and good sense of humor. Being tagged as one of the best soccer players in India, Chhetri has been put by his fans in the same breath as Ronaldo and Messi.
Once again, the Indian captain tried to address the said comparisons in a fun Q&A session on Twitter. When asked what could he could beat Ronaldo and Messi at, minus soccer, Chhetri responded in a hilarious way saying he assumes Ronaldo and Messi are bad at playing billiards game.
According to Chhetri, “carom billiards” is the game where he would definitely dominate Ronaldo and Messi. While Chhetri’s response came as a bit of a surprise, the 35-year-old soccer superstar could be telling the truth. In Ronaldo and Messi’s stellar careers, there has been no documentation or anything that proves the pair have ever played the said sport.
Often being compared to Messi and even dubbed as “Indian Messi,” Chhetri has also tried to settle the comparisons in a humorous way.
Last January, Chhetri answered a few of the most asked questions about him on Google via a video released by PUMA India. The very first question to come across was, “Is Sunil Chhetri better than Lionel Messi?” Chhetri replied, “Yes,” but followed it up with a joke saying he’s better than the Barcelona star in speaking Hindi.
“Yes, Sunil Chhetri is better than Lionel Messi at speaking Hindi. How about that?” Chhetri replied.
Back in 2018, Chhetri made history in India and added another milestone in his career. After matching one of Messi’s feats, Chhetri put his name on the map and the said feat may have caused the comparisons to the Argentine superstar.
But during an interview, the fun and witty Chhetri became serious and quickly dismissed the idea and told the media to “not take the Messi comparisons seriously.”
