National Thesaurus Day is celebrated every year on Jan. 18 to commemorate the birth of Peter Mark Roget, the publisher of the "Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases."

A thesaurus is a reference tool that helps you find synonyms and is traditionally published in print form. However, they are more conveniently available and accessible now online.

Thesaurus helps not only to clarify the meaning of an unfamiliar word but gives a non-native speaker, a range of synonyms in which there might be at least one word that they already know. These synonyms could provide the necessary clues to figure out the meaning of the original word.

Using thesauri can help a person in expanding their vocabulary, improve both written and spoken communication skills as well as creative writing abilities, and further advance their career.
