Cornelius Swarthout of New York received his patent for the waffle iron on Aug. 24, 1869, which made it possible for everyone to relish waffles. National Waffle Day is, therefore, celebrated every year on Aug. 24 to commemorate this moment in history.

In order to make waffles at home, you must preheat the waffle iron then melt butter in the microwave. Take a large bowl and combine flour, baking powder, salt and sugar. Take another bowl and beat together milk and eggs. Whisk the liquid mixture into dry ingredients until just combined. Brush hot waffle iron with melted butter. Pour about 1/2 cup of batter onto iron and close to cook. Remove once it turns golden brown.
