Naya Rivera’s body was recovered from Lake Piru on Monday, giving her family some closure after she went missing in the reservoir six days ago. The “Glee” star is survived by her 4-year-old son, Josey Hollis Dorsey, who will reportedly be looked after by Rivera's mother.
Rivera’s family is now in mourning and are focusing on helping Josey deal with his mother’s death. The late actress' mom, Yolanda Rivera, will reportedly be taking care of Josey, a source said. It is to be mentioned here that Ryan and Rivera have joint physical custody of their child.
"Josey will definitely be looked after by his grandma, who was also extremely close to him, and Ryan," an insider told E! News, adding, "but the family is very worried about Josey's wellbeing. It's all very tragic and the family is heartbroken and devastated."
Josey was with the “Glee” actress when she went missing during a boating trip. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office revealed that the actress used all of her strength to save her son before she drowned.
Her body was found floating near the northeastern corner of Lake Piru, California, on Monday, Ventura County Sheriff William Ayub told reporters at a press conference.
Rivera and Dorsey got married in 2014 and welcomed their son a year later. Although their marriage survived a divorce filing from Rivera in 2016, their relationship went south when the actress was arrested on a domestic battery charge during the Thanksgiving weekend in 2017 for allegedly hitting Dorsey in the head. The charges against her were later dropped.
The couple finalized their divorce a year later and split custody of their son, Josey.
Three months before Rivera’s death, she and her husband agreed to have joint physical custody of the boy.
A document filed March 26 and obtained by People revealed that the exes agreed to "an equal timeshare to be mutually agreed upon” by both the parties. Rivera will have primary physical custody of the child, but both parties would share joint physical custody of Josey.
As for vacations, "every summer, [Rivera] and [Dorsey] shall each have two separate, seven night blocks of consecutive custody with Josey," the documents stated.
Rivera was dedicated to the well-being of her son, saying in a 2019 interview with E! News that her first priority will be Josey.
"Being a mom is always my first priority so everything else can sort of wait," she said at the time. "Nothing's more important than that. I just really make sure that I make time and stay organized so that once I pick him up from school, the rest of the day is ours."
