An arrest warrant has been issued for Los Angeles Lakers center DeMarcus Cousins in Mobile, Alabama, on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge. The Lakers center recently got married and is recovering from an ACL injury that has ruled him out for most of the 2019-20 season.

Cousins’ ex-girlfriend and mother of to his seven-year-old son filed a complaint with the police against the four-time All-Star alleging that he had threatened to “put a bullet in her head” for not allowing his son to attend his wedding to another woman. The recording of the phone call where the threats were made was handed over to the police, while a copy of the conversation was published online by TMZ Sports.

The police confirmed earlier in the week that they were investigating the domestic violation charges but police spokeswoman Charlette Solis confirmed to USA Today on Thursday that an arrest warrant had indeed been issued. The Mobile municipal court website described the charges as a third degree harassing communications.

Cousins’ ex-girlfriend Christy West later confirmed to the same publication that a warrant has been signed to make the case official. She is said to be asking for a restraining order against the Lakers center for the threats made.

The NBA and the Lakers organization also confirmed earlier in the week that they were investigating the alleged charges but refused to make any further comment. The Lakers said they were in the process of gathering information relevant to the allegations before taking a decision.

The NBA’s collective bargaining agreement may see the league fine, suspend, or dismiss and ban players who violate the league’s domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policies.
