NBA Draft Lottery: What Are The Chances The Lakers, Suns, Celtics Get The First Pick Of The 2017 Draft?
The teams that finished with the NBA's worst records will hope the ping-pong balls bounce their way on May 16 in the 2017 draft lottery.
The first three picks of the draft are up for grabs for the 14 teams that failed to reach the playoffs. The 11 teams that don't pick in the top 3 will then draft in reverse order of their winning percentage, with the worst teams drafting ahead of the better teams.
The Boston Celtics, who own the Brooklyn Nets' pick, have a 25 percent chance of getting the first pick, a 46.5 percent chance of getting one of the first two picks and a 64.3 percent chance of getting a pick in the top three. The Celtics are guaranteed a pick in the top four.
The Phoenix Suns had the second-worst record in the NBA and will thus have a 19.9 percent chance of picking No. 1. The Suns will then have a 38.7 percent chance to get one of the top two picks and a 55.8 percent chance for pick within the top three.
The Los Angeles Lakers are in the most interesting situation since their selection is top-three protected. Should teams jump ahead of the Lakers in the draft, they would lose their pick to the Philadelphia 76ers, and there is a 53.1 percent chance that it will happen.
Los Angeles still has a 15.6 percent chance to get the No. 1 pick and 31.3 percent of the first two picks and a 46.9 percent chance to keep their pick.
The Sixers, who have the fourth-worst record, have the chance to have two lottery picks, with potentially the No. 1 pick and the No. 4 pick, as a best-case scenario. Philadelphia also owns the rights to swap draft picks with the Sacramento Kings inside the top 10. If Sacramento's pick falls out of the top 10, it will go to the Chicago Bulls.
Meanwhile, a coin flip will decide the 6th or 7th pick between the New York Knicks and Minnesota Timberwolves.
