NBA: Kevin Durant Brandishes Oklahoma 'Toxic', Feuds With Fans Again

Kevin Durant went from respected and loved to hated and despised overnight in Oklahoma after he decided to leave the Thunder and join Golden State Warriors in 2016. The small forward has now moved on from the Bay Area to his new home in Brooklyn with the Nets but during a recent in-depth interview with The Wall Street Journal he spoke about the toxic atmosphere he experienced when he returned as a visitor in 2017.

The two-time NBA champion was branded a traitor after he made the switch to the Warriors and the reaction was more extreme because he did just months after the Thunder had lost to the Bay Area team in the Western Conference finals. Durant ingrained himself into the Oklahoma community during his nine years with the team but admits that he will never be attached to the city again for the treatment meted out to him.

Durant revealed that he has not spoken to anyone in the organization after he left in 2016 and that he trusts no one. He also spoke of the anger the staff had toward him when he returned with the Warriors in 2017.

“People coming to my house and spray-painting on the for sale signs around my neighborhood,” Durant told WSJ’s J.R. Moehringer. “People making videos in front of my house and burning my jerseys and calling me all types of crazy names.”

“I’ll never be attached to that city again because of that,” the two-time NBA Finals MVP added. “I eventually wanted to come back to that city and be part of that community and organization, but I don’t trust nobody there. That s**t must have been fake, what they was doing. The organization, the GM, I ain’t talked to none of those people, even had a nice exchange with those people, since I left.”

Durant has never been one to mince words when it comes to saying what he thinks and his views about Oklahoma did not sit well with fans of the Thunder. A number of fans reacted to his statement about the treatment meted out to him by the franchise and called for him to grow up, and it was no surprise when the small forward hit back with his own jibe.
