NBA: Learning Never Stops For D'Angelo Russell, Works Out With Steve Nash
There is no question that D'Angelo Russell holds plenty of promise, but he needs the right people to help him improve his game. Seen as one of the promising guards when he entered the 2015 NBA Draft, there is perhaps no better player to guide him than NBA legend Steve Nash.
Nash, taken in back in 2015 by the Golden State Warriors as a player development coach, was spotted working out with the 23-year-old guard. Yahoo Sports shared a photo of the two in the gym with DLO eventually posting a photo of him with Stephen Curry on his Instagram account with the caption: "Got better today #WARRIORS."
With Nash teaching him a thing or two, Russell is undoubtedly on the right track. Getting tips from a Hall of Famer, eight-time All-Star and two-time MVP, the one-time NBA All-Star could pull off a surprise as he debuts with his third team next NBA season.
Russell will have to step up next season for the Warriors as the team tries to rebuild. Klay Thompson is not expected until after the NBA All-Star break, meaning the 23-year-old guard will have to help Curry and Draymond Green hold up the fort for head coach Steve Kerr.
As mentioned in a previous post, Russell believes his success in the NBA will continue with the Dubs. He is aware of the winning culture in Golden State and joining them was one of the things he wanted to do as he builds up on his basketball resume.
"I’m beyond excited! They’ve been to five straight Finals and they do nothing but win. That’s something that I’m trying to add to my resume in this league; [I want to] become a winner. I think this is the first step, going to a team of that caliber. I think it’ll work out pretty great too," Russell said.
Also, Kerr made it clear that Russell will have a major role for the Warriors this 2019-20 NBA season. With Thompson out, the 53-year-old mentor believes DLO will fit into the Dubs system and do a lot of scoring - similar to what he showed last season with the Brooklyn Nets.
"I'm excited to coach him, he's a great young talent," Kerr told reporters in Vegas. "I think he's going to fit right in with our group and we're gonna need him desperately, without Klay especially."
