NBA: Newest Lakers Superstar Will Be Taking More Shots From Downtown
Anthony Davis is gearing up for his first season with the Los Angeles Lakers, teaming up with LeBron James in what most see as more than formidable. The two spearhead a heavily retooled roster, leaving little room for failure. Apparently, the 26-year-old cager is fully aware of that.
For those who have followed his career, Davis has been known to be a monster near the basket. But it appears the top pick of the 2012 NBA Draft is broadening his offensive arsenal. He revealed in an interview with NBA 2K20 that one skill he has worked on is his three-point shooting, explaining that most bigs are heading towards that direction.
“I wanted to be able to stretch the floor at the big (position) because the game is definitely going that way now. I shot, I think, 30-something percent last year — I can’t remember — but I wanna get that in the high 30s. I think, by me doing that, I’ll be able to help the Lakers as much as possible — help us win games and win a championship,” Davis said.
To be exact, Davis was 33.1-percent from the three-point region. He shot 51.7-percent from the field, hardly surprising considering he usually operates down low. Other stats for Davis who played 56 games include 12.0 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 2.4 block and 1.4 steals in 33 minutes of action.
By revealing he was adding the three-point shot to his repertoire, such somehow explains why he was pushing the Lakers to get someone to play the center position. Originally, it was DeMarcus Cousins to man the paint before the injury bug struck. Instead, Los Angeles ended up getting Dwight Howard - a player that Davis reportedly vouched for, CBS Sports reported.
On whether this was related or not may be irrelevant. It remains that Davis has not been too keen on playing the center position in the past. Also, it was reportedly something he emphasized to the Lakers before coming over.
Looking ahead, Davis may need to get used to the idea of manning the middle. This especially holds true if the Lakers go small ball basketball. Hence, it all depends on the type of game the purple and gold will play and the situation they may find themselves in starting this 2019-20 NBA season.
