NBA News: Doc Rivers' Exit A 'Mutual Decision,' Says Los Angeles Clippers Owner
KEY POINTS
- Doc Rivers has stepped down as head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers
- Clippers owner Steve Ballmer says Rivers' exit was a "mutual decision"
- Rivers is expected to gain immediate interest from other teams with vacant coaching spots
The Los Angeles Clippers and head coach Doc Rivers have parted ways, a decision that chairman Steve Ballmer said was mutually agreed upon by both sides.
"Doc has been a terrific coach for the Clippers, an incredible ambassador, and a pillar of strength during tumultuous times," Ballmer said in a statement on Monday, per ESPN. "He won a heck of a lot of games and laid a foundation for this franchise."
Rivers, 58, served as a coach for seven seasons and was also president of basketball operations before he gave up the position in 2017.
His exit announcement comes nearly two weeks after the Clippers blew a 3-1 lead against the Denver Nuggets in the recent Western Conference semifinals.
In his own statement, the champion coach stated that while this was not the ending he envisioned, he believes he was still able to create a lasting impression by helping the Clippers establish a winning culture in the league.
"Thank you, Clipper Nation for allowing me to be your coach and for all your support in helping make this a winning franchise," Rivers said in a statement shared on his Twitter. "When I took this job, my goals were to make this a winning basketball program, a free agent destination, and bring a championship to this organization."
"While I was able to accomplish most of my goals, I won't be able to see them all through," he continued. "Though it was a disappointing ending to our season, you are right there and I know what this team is capable of accomplishing with your support."
Rivers tallied a winning 356-208 overall record as Clippers coach. However, it was marred by several disappointing campaigns, perhaps none bigger than their latest setback in the Orlando bubble.
The Clippers had been tagged as favorites to win the NBA title following the acquisitions of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George last year. But it simply did not work for Rivers and the rest of the team as they had to settle for another early postseason exit.
Rivers becomes the latest addition to the list of coaches who have parted ways with their teams. But with a championship attached to his resume, the former longtime Celtics mentor is expected to gain immediate interest from other teams to take a vacant coaching spot.
