NBA News: Mitchell 'Not Pleased' After Missing Utah Jazz's Playoff Opener
KEY POINTS
- Donovan Mitchell has been sidelined by an ankle injury since April
- Mitchell declared himself "ready to go" for Game 1 vs the Memphis Grizzlies
- The medical staff's decision to hold him out did not please the Utah Jazz star
The Utah Jazz will open their playoff campaign against the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday minus their superstar Donovan Mitchell.
The All-Star was ruled out due to an ankle sprain that has kept him off the floor since April 16.
According to ESPN's Tim MacMahon, the decision of the Jazz medical staff to hold Mitchell out of the game did not sit well with him.
Mitchell declared himself "ready to go," per MacMahon, but will eventually miss the series opener for the top-seeded Western Conference team.
"Quin Snyder says Jazz medical staff met with Donovan Mitchell after shootaround and decided to hold him out of Game 1. He acknowledged that Mitchell, who declared himself “ready to go" when he talked to media post-shootaround, isn’t pleased with the decision," the tweet wrote.
The 6-3 Mitchell is an integral part of the Jazz's success this season, averaging 26.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 5.2 assists.
Mitchell ranks 37th in real plus-minus at 2.5, helping his team out-score opponents when on the court.
The ninth-seeded Grizzlies knocked out the Golden State Warriors in the play-in tournament to secure the final playoff seed in the Western Conference.
With Mitchell out, Ja Morant is expected to give the Utah defense a much more difficult time.
The budding star scored 35 points in the win over the Warriors, on top of six rebounds and six assists.
He also tallied 20 points in their initial win over the San Antonio Spurs.
Others poised to step up both offensively and defensively for the Jazz include their pair of Sixth Man of the Year finalists Joe Ingles and Jordan Clarkson.
