NBA News: Ongoing Success Proving 76ers Can Move On Without Disgruntled Star
KEY POINTS
- The Sixers are proving that they can win without Ben Simmons
- Daryl Morey is still showing a tough stance on Simmons' trade offers
- Morey appears to be willing to wait for the right offer for Simmons
The Philadelphia 76ers continue to wait on credible and acceptable offers for disgruntled player Ben Simmons.
The 25-year-old has yet to play, but it appears the Sixers could care less.
Even without the 2018 NBA Rookie of the Year, the Sixers are rolling. They currently sport an 8-4 win-loss record in the Eastern Conference, good for the fourth spot.
With that showing, Sixers president Daryl Morey is being vindicated in a way.
Sadly, that does not hold for Simmons who continues to hold out.
Although Simmons is around physically, he has been finding ways to avoid suiting up for the Sixers.
He initially complained about a back injury and then followed it up with a mental health issue.
Philly is trying to understand the situation, but the signs are clear that the Australian cager has little to no interest in playing for the team and would rather wait for a trade to happen.
However, the longer he sits out could be detrimental to his All-Star value.
Under normal circumstances, a superstar holding out for any NBA team would be bad and reflect on their win-loss record.
But it has a somewhat reverse effect on the Sixers, thanks mainly to an assembly of role players who are humming with superstar center Joel Embiid.
Sports pundits have taken note of this development. David Murphy of the Philadelphia Inquirer stressed that the team can afford to wait on offers for Simmons and gave Morey the credit for his bold stance on the All-Star guard.
"They look like a team that can afford to wait. They’ve given the rest of the NBA’s general managers reason to believe that Morey might actually be crazy enough to let the Simmons situation linger all the way to the trade deadline in February," Murphy wrote.
Bur for Fox Sports NBA writer Yaron Weitzman, he is not fond of the strategy of Morey in handling the Simmons situation.
