NBA player Miles Bridges is currently facing domestic violence and child abuse charges for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend in front of their children in June, prosecutors have said.
The 24-year-old Charlotte Hornets free agent was formally charged with one felony count of injuring his girlfriend and two felony counts of child abuse in Los Angeles Tuesday, The New York Times reported, citing the District Attorney's Office.
Bridges, who was accused of causing "great bodily injury to the domestic violence victim, was arrested in Los Angeles on June 29 but was released on a $130,000 bond, according to the outlet.
Charges against the basketball player came after his 24-year-old girlfriend, Mychelle Johnson, took to Instagram on July 1 to share graphic photos of her injuries as well as a medical report that indicated, "Adult victim of physical abuse by a male partner; Assault by strangulation, Brain concussion; Closed fracture of nasal bone; Contusion of rib; Multiple bruises; Strain of neck muscle," as per ABC News.
"I hate that it has come to this but I can't be silent anymore," she wrote in the now-deleted Instagram post, according to the outlet. "I've allowed someone to destroy my home, abuse me in every way possible and traumatize our kids for life."
In a statement announcing the charges against Bridges, Los Angeles District Attorney Gascón mentioned how domestic violence "creates physical, mental and emotional trauma that has a lasting impact on survivors."
"Children who witness family violence are especially vulnerable and the impact on them is immeasurable. Mr. Bridges will be held accountable for his actions and our Bureau of Victim Services will support the survivors through this difficult process," he added.
Bridges is scheduled to be arraigned in a Los Angeles County Superior Court Wednesday, as the Los Angeles Police Department is still investigating the case, according to The Hill.
The Charlotte Hornets released a statement on Wednesday, saying, "We are aware of the charges that were filed today against Miles Bridges. These are very serious charges that we will continue to monitor. As this is a legal matter, we will have no further comment at this time."
The former Michigan State University star played for the Charlotte Hornets for the previous four seasons, setting career highs in points, rebounds and assists in 80 games for the NBA team last year.
