NBA Rumors: 5 Players The Los Angeles Lakers Can Acquire
The Los Angeles Lakers currently have the best record in the National Basketball Association at 15-2, winning all of their 15 games so far within the last 16 nights following a season-opening loss to their fellow Staples Center tenants Los Angeles Clippers.
But just like the Clippers and all the other teams, the Lakers still need some retooling to assure that they will regain the NBA title. The Lakers are currently in the middle of the pack in terms of points per game (11th at 111.9) and three-point shooting (17th at 35.5 percent).
Amadou Sow of Fadeaway World listed down five potential additions the Lakers can acquire if they want a deep run to the playoffs. Here are those players:
Andre Iguodala
Andre Iguodala has long been rumored for a move to the Lakers from the Memphis Grizzlies. In fact, Memphis was initially rumored to be letting go of the former NBA Finals Most Valuable Player through a buyout.
However, the Grizzlies suddenly took a U-turn and now demand a trade if the other teams want to get a hold of Iguodala. ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, during the network's NBA pre-game broadcast on Friday night, said that they are reiterating the trade demand.
"The message that Memphis has been delivering to the entire league, to teams who would love to get him, especially for the postseason, the Clippers, the Lakers, the Houston Rockets: 'You're going to have to trade for him. We are not buying him out. He is not going to be on the free-agent market,'" said Wojnarowski.
Speaking of the Clippers, they, according to Ron Gutterman of Lakers Nation, have a better shot at acquiring Iguodala from the Grizzlies if the latter continues to demand a trade since the former has a bunch of assets that it can give up for the veteran.
"At 35 years old he is fine sitting right now," Wojnarowski continued in the television interview.
But should Iguodala, whose contract expires at the end of the season, end up with the Lakers, he can provide more muscle defensively for them. However, they may need to wait for Christmas to have a shot at him.
"I think the date of Dec. 15 will be an important day for Andre Iguodala. That is when the summer's free agents, almost 40 percent of the players in the league are eligible to be traded," Wojnarowski further said. "Now you can get more creative with deals."
Jae Crowder
Since we are already looking at Memphis, let us take a look at another Grizzly, Jae Crowder.
Crowder is having a career renaissance with the Grizzlies, averaging career highs in rebounds (6.1 per game) and assists (3.o), and he can also be effective in a slow-paced game like what the Lakers are doing.
The Lakers currently tend to take things slowly at 100.28 possessions per game, the seventh-worst pace so far in the season, and Crowder can be of a great fit. Also, Crowder can provide a spark in the ninth-worst bench scoring team in the league at 34.7 points a game.
Dennis Schroder
The Lakers can also take a look at Oklahoma City Thunder's Dennis Schroder. Sow noted that despite Schroder's decent at best stats so far, he, like Crowder, can alleviate some of the Lakers' concerns right now.
With LeBron James doing a Magic Johnson so far by playing point guard when he is a natural small forward, Schroder, a legit point guard, is expected to play off the bench. It will not be a problem, though.
David Bertans
Do not be surprised if the Washington Wizards pull off a trade for David Bertans.
Bertans is currently on track for a 50-40-90 season, making 46 percent of his total field goals, 44.3 percent of his triples, and 91.7 percent of his charities, and he has helped Washington become the second most explosive team in terms of offense.
However, the team is currently in the bubble, taking ninth place in the Eastern Conference at 5-9. On whether the Wizards make the playoffs or not will depend on their remaining games.
If they suddenly crash soon, it could be likely that they will give up Bertans in a trade and just rebuild from there.
Ryan Anderson
Ryan Anderson may be old already, but he is still a serviceable asset. Anderson currently plays for Houston, but he can become available if the team decides to let him go in free agency, and the Lakers can go for it.
