KEY POINTS

  • The Warriors are planning alternatives if Edwards is beyond reach
  • Ball and Wiseman are not among the second options for Dubs
  • Israeli player looms as plausible option

The Golden State Warriors are expected to be among the teams headlining the 2020 NBA Draft, with most already linking them to Anthony Edwards. They have the best odds to gain the rights to the first overall pick, with stakes raised since they own the worst record in the 2019-20 NBA season. However, there is also a chance that they may miss out on being the team to pick first on June 25.

Should they officially be the first team to select, sources told the San Francisco Chronicle that it will be used on Anthony Edwards. This is assuming that they do not pull off a deal before selecting or trading the 18-year-old once picked. Adding Edwards would give head coach Steve Kerr a more lethal backcourt with three explosive guards.

But some critics believe that they could use a big man instead. James Wiseman would have made sense, but he is a player who needs plenty of polishing. The Dubs are unlikely to waste their top pick opportunity on someone who needs work, making Edwards the unanimous choice to be selected.

Aside from Edwards and Wiseman, there is also LaMelo Ball. Surprisingly, the two targets after Edwards were not either. Instead, sources claimed that the Warriors' other options include Tyrese Haliburton of Iowa State, Isaak Okoro of Auburn and Deni Avdija of Israel. Haliburton plays the point guard position, while Okoro and Avdija play forward. As far as height goes, Haliburton is listed at 6-foot-5 and Okoro at 6-foot-6. Avdija is the tallest of the three, standing at 6-foot-9.

Of the three, it appears Avdija could be a sensible target considering Golden State needs more big men than guards. However, this issue may only crop up if the Dubs do not get the right to pick first at the 2020 NBA Draft.

Edwards remains the top target, someone other NBA teams would potentially trade for. And the 18-year-old has the numbers to prove his worth. In 32 games while suiting up for Georgia, the 6-foot-5 guard averaged 19.1 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists. He owns an impressive field goal shooting clip of 40.2 percent. Though he has impressive credentials, it will be interesting how Kerr squeezes him alongside Curry and Thompson. There is a possibility that the Warriors may go small-ball once more next season - something that has contributed to their success in the past seasons.

Aside from that, there is the question of health to its key players. Curry, Thompson and Draymond Green have had their share of injuries this year. If all can return health by the 2020-21 NBA season, the Dubs should be primed for a big bounce-back campaign.
