NBA Rumors: Boston Celtics Seen As Possible Destination For Former All-Star Center
KEY POINTS
- Boston Celtics could sign DeMarcus Cousins
- Next season will be a make or break year for Cousins
- The Celtics are still in need of a solid big man
Despite the injuries, DeMarcus Cousins is still seen as a valuable asset for any team. And being one of those who are in dire need of a potent man down the middle, the Boston Celtics are reportedly joining the sweepstakes to acquire the former All-Star.
The decline in Cousins' game has become evident due to his series of injuries. As such, analysts believe that next season will be a make or break year for the former Kentucky Wildcat, whose best option, accordingly, is to join a legitimate NBA Championship contender like the Celtics.
“Chances are that Cousins is going to get another one-year prove-it deal this offseason so naturally, the teams that make the most sense for him should be contending for an NBA Championship. The Boston Celtics are one of those teams,” Jason Reed of Fansided’s Lake Show Life wrote.
The 29-year-old center signed with the Los Angeles Lakers last summer after a short stint with the Golden State Warriors. Cousins was set to reunite with Anthony Davis and run the court with LeBron James, only to be stalled by another injury during a work out in the off-season.
The Lakers would capture a spot for the Playoffs, where Cousins was initially reported to make his debut. In a surprising turn of events, though, he was released by the team to make room for Markieff Morris.
While unconfirmed reports say the Lakers – by virtue of an alleged gentleman’s agreement - remain as the frontrunners to re-sign Cousins in the upcoming free agency, Reed thinks the Celtics are still worth taking the chance.
“The one thing that the team lacks is quality size as Enes Kanter is the team’s best center and after that they are thin. They are really missing the presence of Al Horford, who signed with the Philadelphia 76ers and has not been a good fit on that roster,” Reed continued.
“If Cousins returned to 80 percent of what he was during his All-NBA seasons then it would undoubtedly give the Celtics the deepest roster in the Eastern Conference and the most dynamic.”
Cousins is averaging 21.2 points, 10.9 rebounds, and 3.2 assists in his career while shooting 46.1% from the field and 33.2% from deep. He played for seven seasons with the Sacramento Kings, who drafted him at fifth overall in 2010. He was shipped to the New Orleans Pelicans halfway through the 2017 season before signing with the Warriors in 2018.
