KEY POINTS

  • Joe Johnson could be a surprise addition to the Bucks heading into the NBA playoffs
  • Johnson could provide experience and quality minutes off the bench for the Bucks
  • The Bucks need to bulk up to stay competitive against the Sixers and the Nets

The Milwaukee Bucks know they need more manpower if they seek to fare well in the NBA playoffs.

The Bucks do have an open roster spot, and it appears they plan to use that on a familiar name in Joe Johnson.

Already 39, it will be interesting if adding the seven-time All-Star will help the cause of head coach Mike Budenholzer.

But all that may hinge on how Johnson performs at his upcoming workout, according to an update from Michael Sotto of Hoops Hype.

There is no question that Johnson has accomplished a lot in his NBA career. He holds career averages of 16 points, four rebounds, and 3.9 assists in the 1,276 games he played.

His last NBA stint came with the Houston Rockets and the Utah Jazz although his production was not as impressive compared to the years he spent with the Atlanta Hawks.

Regardless, the Bucks would be adding Johnson for his experience and provide quality minutes off the bench.

Outside the NBA, Johnson showed that he still had the hops. He won the BIG3 title with the Triplets in 2019 and was also adjudged as the league's MVP the same year.

Johnson’s potential coming is unlikely to be considered a major factor by most although he could provide a worthy spell to Budenholzer’s main stars.

Aside from Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton, the Bucks are hoping that new additions like Jrue Holiday, PJ Tucker, Jeff Teague and Bobby Portis are enough to compete against souped-up and improved teams in the Eastern Conference.

Also, Johnson could help the Bucks in the scoring department with Antetokounmpo missing some games due to left knee soreness.

Antetokounmpo has missed five games so far, so adding a 6-foot-7 swingman could provide some scoring sock aside from veteran presence.

Right now, the Brooklyn Nets and the Philadelphia 76ers are lording it over the conference and have silently bumped off the Bucks from favorites this NBA season.

But most know that the competition will be entirely different during the postseason wars and adding some missing pieces like Johnson could boost Milwaukee’s chances.

As of this writing, the Bucks are running third in the Eastern Conference with a 33-20 card. They are 3.5 games behind the Eastern Conference-leading 76ers and the Nets.
