KEY POINTS

  • Dunn could be done for the season
  • Bulls may be forced to look for replacement
  • Dunn injury similar to the one he suffered last NBA season

The Chicago Bull are finding ways to stay afloat with an injury-riddled roster. Moving forward, it appears head coach Jim Boylen has another problem over the horizon with Kris Dunn possibly missing the rest of the 2019-20 season with an MCL strain.

Dunn suffered the injury when the Bulls played the Brooklyn Nets. Though it was diagnosed as a strained MCL, NBC Sports Chicago reports that the next update on the 25-year-old guard may not be a pleasant one. There is growing belief that Dunn could miss the rest of the season. The report added that the injury seems similar to the one the 5th overall pick of the 2016 NBA Draft suffered last season, a reason why he saw action in only 23 contest.

As of this writing, Dunn has missed four games already for Chicago. With 27 games left in their schedule, there is no telling if the 6-foot-3 guard will force the issue and play out the remainder of the 2019-20 NBA season. Dunn, someone who is often mentioned in NBA trade rumors, will become a restricted free agent in the summer, Yardbarker pointed out. His numbers may not be that impressive this season but the two-time Big East Player of the Year has been doing a splendid job on the defensive end.

Also, Dunn is just six starts away from meeting the starter criteria. This would weigh heavily on his next paycheck, making him eligible for a qualifying offer of $4,642,800. There is a lot on the line for Dunn and he is most likely aware of it.

Should Dunn be done for the season, they may need to skim the free agent market for available talent. Like other teams, they could monitor the buyout market where several players are expected to become available. In a previous post, Josh Jackson was suggested as a potential target but the Memphis Grizzlies beat the Bulls to signing him.

A player that Boylen may want is likely someone who still has the legs to keep up with the other Bulls players. It would likely be a short-term deal, meaning that player would be signed only up to the end of the season. Names like J.R. Smith or even Dion Waiters are worth looking into, probably two of the best names any team are considering right now.
