KEY POINTS

  • Darius Garland's time with the Cleveland Cavaliers could be coming to an end
  • The Cavs are expected to target Jalen Suggs
  • Garland is likely to draw interest from teams looking for a young and talented guard

The Cleveland Cavaliers most likely know that the current season is slowly slipping away and have to make moves.

The past months have seen some top names on the team either being traded or bought out, and this does not exclude some of their young players like Collin Sexton and Darius Garland.

Ever since LeBron James left the team, Sexton and Garland were tagged as the new faces to start a new era of Cavaliers basketball.

But with Cleveland likely to use the next NBA Draft to start anew, the future of the two could be threading on thin ice. One name that comes to mind is Jalen Suggs, the same guy who shot that miraculous heave that helped Gonzaga get past the UCLA Bruins.

Assuming that the Cavs have Suggs on their radar, one of the two young guards may have to go.

Sam Amico feels that based on Garland’s performance, he could be the odd man out. He and Sexton play similar styles but are atrocious on defense. Hence, this could force Cavs’ management to explore the market and take in other players who could play better on both ends of the court.

Also, pundits feel that it would be foolish for the Cavs to pass up on Suggs. He is seen as a big upgrade over Sexton and Garland.

In addition, Suggs is seen as a lottery pick alongside other budding hoop stars such as Corey Kispert and Drew Timme. Some feel that Cleveland has a chance to snag one or two of them, such as an opportunity that they should not pass up.

If that does happen, it places Garland in a spot. But if one looks at his numbers this season, some will agree that the 21-year-old from Indiana may be of use to other NBA teams in search of a young energetic guard.

In 40 games, Garland has averaged 16.2 points, 5.8 assists, and 2.4 rebounds in 33.4 minutes of action. These are improved numbers compared to his rookie year where he normed 12.3 markers, 3.9 dimes, and 1.9 boards.

But as mentioned earlier, it is the former Vanderbilt’s defense that needs polishing.

Garland could be an interesting player to watch if the Cavs do cut ties with the All-American. For now, he will just have to play through these murmurs.

In his last game, Garland was nearing a triple-double, but his roll was cut short when he got ejected after being assessed a technical foul in their loss to the Miami Heat, 115-101.
