NBA Rumors: Clippers Looking At Former Laker To Provide Shooting Cover
The Los Angeles Clippers have one final spot to fill to complete their 15-man NBA roster and are looking at options before heading into training camp next month. They are the favorites for the 2020 NBA championship after a mega offseason that saw them land 2019 NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard and 2019 regular season MVP contender Paul George.
The Clippers are keen to add another shooter to their squad and according to Amico Hoops’ Ben Stinar, they are looking at free agent Jodie Meeks. The veteran shooting guard is without a team after spending the second half of last season with Toronto Raptors.
He played as a rotation player for the Raptors, who went on to beat the Golden State Warriors 4-2 in the 2019 NBA Finals. He could be tempted to take a minimum contract and rejoin his former teammate and new talisman of the Clippers. Defensively, the Los Angeles franchise is potentially going to be unstoppable next season but they are short of scorers, mainly from behind the arc and Meeks can provide them with cover.
The 32-year-old guard’s main strength lies from shooting beyond the arc and he can be depended upon to provide solid backing from the bench. He is a career 37.3 percent shooter from the three-point range. With the Clippers languishing in the bottom of the league when it came to three-pointers made and attempted last season, they could consider making their interest concrete.
The Clipper, however, are not the only team interested in the veteran free agent, with Stinar reporting that the Charlotte Hornets and Milwaukee Bucks also looking to potentially sign the shooting guard. He could join another potential NBA championship candidate in the Clippers, but having won his first in 2019, the veteran is more likely to join the team that offers him the best terms.
One of Meeks’ best seasons came when he was with Clippers’ city rivals Los Angeles Lakers in the 2013-14 when he averaged 15.7 points for the campaign. The two teams are expected to form a strong rivalry this campaign owing to both teams bolstering their lineups and being considered among the favorites for the 2020 title.
