  • Detroit Pistons might target Fred VanVleet in Free Agency
  • Blake Griffin had surgery on his left knee
  • Pistons could get rid of Drummond and Griffin

The current NBA regular season has not reached its halfway point yet, but the Detroit Pistons are already setting the table for the next one as reports have surfaced saying the team is targeting Toronto Raptors guard Fred VanVleet on free agency in July.

According to James Edwards III of the Athletic, the Pistons are at a crossroads as the executives are observing the scales whether to keep their patience on the rebuild process or field in a competitive roster for next season.

If the front office points at the direction of the latter, then chances are they are going right after the undrafted-turned-champion VanVleet.

"Looking ahead, the Pistons’ future isn’t any clearer. The organization has hinted at rebuilding, but sources say decision-makers are considering the possibility of building a competitive roster next season. Detroit will likely start its pursuit with Raptors point guard Fred VanVleet, a restricted free agent this summer," Edwards said.

The report came after Blake Griffin's left knee surgery, right in the midst of the rumors about Andre Drummond being shopped by the Pistons to another team - both of which are indications that the Detroit organization is certainly heading towards a fresh revamp.

VanVleet is having a career season so far, averaging 18.0 points, 7.0 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game while being an integral part of keeping the defending champs afloat in the Eastern Conference.

Tyler Conway of the Bleacher Report projects that should the Pistons pursue VanVleet and decide to step into the real competition next year, the team might get rid of the twin towers and pair the 25-year-old guard with some other valued players where he would co-exist.

"Re-signing Drummond, hoping Griffin is healthy next season and adding VanVleet might be enough to make the Pistons a playoff team, but that's not the recipe for a contender. Detroit could probably extract some value for Drummond now on the trade market and showcase Griffin next season for a trade as part of a rebuild," Conway said.
