  • Marc Gasol will resume his hoop career with Girona in Spain
  • A Barcelona stint for Gasol was scorned due to a financial situation
  • Gasol's arrival will boost Girona's chances in the Spanish second division

Marc Gasol knows that he is in the twilight of his hoop career and wants to end it with a bang.

It appears he has the perfect setup for that by winding it up with his own team, Girona.

According to a report by L’Esportiu de Catalunya pointed out by EuroHoop.net, the former NBA Defensive Player of the Year will be announcing his decision to join Girona soon.

Girona is a team where he played for before and a club that he owns. An announcement could be made as early as Monday, September 13.

There were two clubs mentioned as Gasol’s possible next stop. The other was Barcelona where he would reunite with older brother Pau.

But due to finances and roster issues, the 36-year-old appears geared more toward playing with Girona.

Also, Gasol has reportedly expressed his desire to finish his career with the ballclub.

Girona is currently playing in the Spanish second division. While his performance appeared to be wading in the NBA, Gasol is said to be the best player on the team once he joins.

His arrival could provide Girona a boost to the top of the division.

Gasol was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies along with a 2024 second-round pick plus cash in exchange for the rights to Wang Zhelin according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN last September 11.

However, the move was seen more as a temporary stop with the Grizzlies expected to release the 6-foot-11 cager, something that linked him to a possible move back to Spain.

Gasol technically wraps up one part of his decorated basketball career in the NBA. He is a three-time All-Star, a former NBA Defensive Player of the Year (2013), and an NBA champion (2019) when he was still with the Toronto Raptors.

When he joined the Lakers last NBA season, Gasol could have won his second NBA ring. But things just did not turn out as most expected and the Spaniard found himself falling down head coach Frank Vogel’s pecking order.

His future grew dimmer with the signing of DeAndre Jordan, pushing him further down the big man rotation.
