KEY POINTS

  • John Wall will miss more games for the Houston Rockets this season due to a knee issue
  • The Rockets will bank on Victor Oladipo and Kevin Porter Jr. to man the backcourt for now
  • The Rockets may re-evaluate the future with Wall due to his injury history

The Houston Rockets are hanging in there, maximizing with what they have right now.

John Wall, one of the key pawns in that Russell Westbrook trade, got a new lease on life. However, his durability has not changed.

He could be up for another medical procedure, which could be a red flag if the Rockets are bent on progressing to a new era of NBA basketball.

Wall has been playing superb basketball this 2020-21 NBA season, averaging 21 points, 6.0 assists, and 3.2 rebounds in 31.7 minutes of action.

It is a great performance considering he missed the entire 2019-20 NBA season. However, it appears the five-time All-Star’s injury problems remain.

According to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports, Wall is likely to have his left knee scoped at some point this NBA season. The 30-year-old suffered a contusion during practice earlier this month.

Wall has been missing the past three games for the Rockets, and there is no timetable on his return. The procedure sidelines the 2010 NBA top pick anew and there is no telling if his performance will be affected by the planned knee surgery.

With Houston’s chances this season not looking good, it may not be surprising if he ends up sitting the rest of the regular season.

But beyond that, the Rockets may have to re-evaluate if Wall is the right guy to lead the franchise. Although his numbers are something to behold, the fact remains that his injury history is a cause for alarm.

Despite showing he can deliver the numbers when healthy, sitting out some games could be telling on the Rockets' future campaigns.

The 2014 NBA Slam Dunk champion is due $41.2 million this season. He has two years left in his current pact and is owed roughly $91.6 million.

The veteran guard does have a player option in 2022. But looking at his plight the past seasons, Wall is likely to opt-in and negotiate for another big deal by 2023.

With Wall out for an unspecified number of games, the Rockets will pin its hopes on Victor Oladipo–someone who has also been in the center of NBA trade talks.

Kevin Porter Jr. was called up from the G-League to serve as a backup, but it appears he could be seeing more action with Wall missing some games.
