Chris Dunn was a highly touted talent from the Providence Friars men's basketball team a couple of years ago. The 25-year-old guard has yet to live up to expectations, especially with the numbers that he's put up since he was drafted 5th overall by the Timberwolves in 2016.
Dunn averaged 11.3 points, 4.1 rebounds and six assists per game on 42% shooting last season for Chicago. Wherein the young guard showed flashes of brilliance for a couple of games, including a spectacular showing against the Wizards on March 20.
He scored a season-high 26 points and contributed 13 assists. Not to mention his clutch performance in OT, where he scored eight points to stun Washington with a 126–120 overtime win.
However, Dunn still has problems with his consistency. There is a growing concern that the 25-year-old may never develop into a bonified star as NBA scouts believed when he was still playing in Connecticut.
But could a change of scenery revive his career? According to Aaron Peterson of Pippen Ain't Easy, the Atlanta Hawks may be willing to give the young guard a shot for the right pieces. Several trade scenarios could come into play, including a deal involving Dunn and two future second-round picks.
Peterson said that the Hawks would not only receive a potential All-Star candidate but would also have a reliable back-up for the point guard position. Trae Young is showing a lot of upsides, especially at the end of the All-Star break and adding Dunn would do wonders for the second unit.
Dunn will be a steal if he plays like he did when he was still wearing the Friar's uniform. Peterson added that Kris is also a solid defensive stopper, a potential duo between Dunn and Kevin Huerter could be beneficial for coach Lloyd Pierce.
Dunn could also form a formidable backcourt duo with Trae Young if he slides at the two-position. But the former Providence player would be more comfortable playing a role where he could shine.
Contrary to his situation in Chicago, he could take advantage of the added playtime, something that he had to compete when he was starting for the Bulls last season.
Dunn, when on his best, can create shots for himself and others. He's also a hellbent defender capable of stopping the opposing team's offensive options, particularly at the top of the key.
