NBA Rumors: Kyle Korver Deal To Utah Made Cavs Players Unhappy
Kyle Korver's trade to the Utah Jazz was reportedly not received well by Cleveland Cavaliers players.
On Wednesday, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported the Cavaliers had traded Korver to the Jazz in exchange for Alec Burks and two future second-round picks.
The trade was seemingly from out of nowhere, at least with Utah being a potential destination, and according to The Athletic's Joe Vardon, many Cavaliers players were "upset" by the news, particularly as the 37-year-old was one of the best three-point shooters in the league today.
Cavs forward Tristan Thompson, however, was one who was at peace with the move as it was simply business.
"At the end of the day it's a business and anyone can get moved," Thompson told Vardon. "If the trade is right and it adds up, then someone can get moved unless you have a no-trade clause. I don't know who has that. So the only two guys that are safe in the NBA are Bron and Steph Curry."
"Everyone else, you can be moved. All you can do is control what you can control. Come in, play hard every day, do your job and don't get in trouble," he added.
Korver was in the second year of a three year, $22 million deal with the Cavs before the trade. As Bleacher Report notes, the 2003 NBA draft product had a gentleman's agreement with the franchise, allowing him to be traded or bought out if LeBron James had left in the summer of 2018.
That eventually occurred when James became an unrestricted free agent and signed with the Los Angeles Lakers. And Korver's departure marks yet another change for Cleveland, who not only lost James, but had to fire head coach Tyronn Lue after a poor 0-6 start while J.R. Smith has left the team to plan an outgoing trade.
Kevin Love, meanwhile, is currently injured as the Cavs are currently 4-16 for the season. Korver featured in 16 of those games, averaging just 15.7 minutes per game with 6.8 points and 1.8 rebounds per game with 46.3 percent shooting from three-point range.
He was previously linked with the likes of the Los Angeles Lakers, Philadelphia 76ers, Milwaukee Bucks and Oklahoma City Thunder, while recent rumors stated Cleveland offered him in a trade package to the Sixers for Markelle Fultz.
However, he will now add further depth, though he could likely start as well, and a three-point threat to a talented, but struggling Jazz side (10-12) including the likes of Donovan Mitchell, Rudy Gobert and Derrick Favors.
