KEY POINTS

  • The Lakers have decided to waive Jordan and Doumbuya for backup players
  • Their frustrations are mounting with playoff chances getting dimmer
  • James, Westbrook and Ariza trade smack talk with a fan in the humiliating loss to Pelicans

The Los Angeles Lakers have cut ties with DeAndre Jordan and Wenyen Gabriel to take in a couple of players who may not dramatically turn their fortunes around.

Jordan made headlines from an errant pass, a picture that somehow shows the poor showing of the Lakers this season.

Regardless, the 33-year-old center may not be jobless for long with the Philadelphia 76ers reportedly interested in his services.

If it pushes through, he would be the third former Lakers center to move to Philly after Dwight Howard and Andre Drummond, ESPN reported.

Seeing how Howard and Drummond were able to pick up their careers after their stint with the Sixers, there is a chance that Jordan may follow.

Also worth mentioning is that the impending move would reunite Jordan with head coach Doc Rivers.

The Lakers are reportedly set to sign DJ Augustin and Wenyen Gabriel. However, the two are unlikely to play a huge factor as the franchise tries to figure out how to turn their sagging campaign around.

In the case of Gabriel, the Lakers are waiving Sekou Doumbuya to make room for him. It will allegedly be a two-way contract, according to Jovan Buha of The Athletic.

The recent moves of the Lakers are considered minor and may not play a huge role. With most of their team budget used on LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook, these are the only moves that Los Angeles can do right now.

Hence, their chances of making it in the playoffs are on the line.

After successive losses--the last of which was an embarrassing home blowout defeat to the New Orleans Pelicans--the morale of the Lakers is pretty much in question.

In that game against the Pelicans, videos showing James, Westbrook and Trevor Ariza jawing with a fan clearly painted the frustration within the ranks.

Although the unnamed fan was escorted out, the appalling part was when Lakers team owner Jeanie Buss left the game somewhere in the third quarter with her team trailing by as much as 25 points.
