NBA Rumors: Luka Doncic Picked To Foil Giannis Antetokounmpo Potential Third-Straight MVP Award
KEY POINTS
- NBA scouts and executives see Luka Doncic as MVP next season
- Giannis Antetokounmpo surprisingly falls down the pecking order
- The Dallas Mavericks' performance next season could help Doncic in the MVP race
The 2020-21 NBA season has not yet started, but some league scouts and executives are already seeing rising star Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks as someone who could run away with the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.
Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks has already won back-to-back NBA MVP trophies and a third one cannot be discounted. However, he may be in for some tough competition with the Slovenian.
A group of eight composed of NBA scouts and executives responded to an ESPN survey that included their choice for next season’s MVP. Doncic got four votes, while Antetokounmpo got only one.
Surprisingly, Nikola Jokic got two votes and Damian Lillard received one as well.
"It's hard to see Giannis winning three in a row," one scout from the Western Conference said. "And I think there's more of an opportunity for Luka to kind of put on an MVP show and do more on an individual basis."
If this comes to fruition, Doncic would become the youngest cager in league history to win the prestigious award.
In addition, he would become only the second player in Mavs history to win that plum, joining retired German player Dirk Nowitzki.
There is reason to believe that Doncic has a case to be the next NBA MVP. Most marveled at his performance last season, averaging 28.8 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 8.8 assists per game.
The Slovenian ace is doing it on both ends of the floor, something that already makes him a pretty valuable player for Mark Cuban.
Finally, there is little fanfare surrounding the third overall pick of the 2018 NBA Draft. Antetokounmpo’s season will be marred by speculations on his future. He has yet to sign a max-deal with the Bucks, raising questions on his focus this coming season.
