NBA Rumors: New York Knicks Possible Destination For Champion Point Guard
KEY POINTS
- The New York Knicks are struggling in the regular season
- Fred VanVleet is one of the quality guards in the free agency market
- The New York Knicks can benefit from VanVleet's championship experience
The struggles of the New York Knicks continue as they remain near the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings. They have a 17-41 record and are on a five-game losing streak. In their last ten games, they’ve only won four and lost six. They’ve won fewer games at home than they have on the road.
The point guard position of the Knicks could use some reinforcements and adding someone with championship experience can help the organization. Dennis Smith Jr. and Frank Ntilikina haven’t put up big averages during their stint with the franchise. While they’ve shown sparks of promise, the team just hasn’t found their way to consistently winning.
With Fred VanVleet coming in the free agency market, teams could use his experience for their roster. VanVleet was an undrafted point guard out of Wichita State. He kicked off his NBA career in the developmental league where he won the G-League championship in 2017. His consistency on the floor was able to earn him a spot to the Toronto Raptors’ main roster. Ever since then he has found a way to gel in nicely with the franchise.
He was a pivotal piece in the Raptors’ postseason run last year as he stepped up when his number was called. He was known to drain clutch shots in the playoffs including big plays down the stretch against the Golden State Warriors.
He is now having a career year as he’s putting up 17.6 points and 6.6 assists per game. Despite Kawhi Leonard leaving for the LA Clippers, the Raptors have been able to maintain their reputation as a force to be reckoned with in the league. He’s integral to the team’s second seed standing in the Eastern Conference. They’re now at 42-16 and are eight games behind the number one Milwaukee Bucks.
If the Knicks are able to get VanVleet’s services then he can be a good pairing with number three overall pick RJ Barrett. Barrett is a left-handed scorer and is averaging 13.7 points per game. The experience and leadership VanVleet brings can benefit and develop the younger players in New York.
