KEY POINTS

  • The Toronto Raptors will look to add new talent in the offseason
  • Kelly Olynyk could be a sensible addition after a quietly good performance this regular season
  • Daniel Theis could be developed further under the watch of Nick Nurse

The Toronto Raptors are official out of the NBA playoff race, compelling to go back to the drawing board and regroup.

It has been a disappointing 2020-21 season, and team president Masai Ujiri needs to figure out how to put the former defending champions back on the winning track.

There are big names available in the NBA offseason that the Raptors may consider. Among the names that come to mind include Chris Paul, Kawhi Leonard, DeMar DeRozan, Mike Conley and Victor Oladipo.

However, their chances of getting those players may not be high.

Leonard and Paul are unlikely to opt out of their respective contracts, while Oladipo may not be a wise option considering he will be undergoing season-ending surgery.

Aside from that, the Heat guard recently bought a mansion in Miami Beach that somehow hints he plans to stay with his mother team moving forward.

DeRozan and Conley could be plausible options. But if one looks at the roster of head coach Nick Nurse, taking in a big man to reinforce their frontline would make sense.

The sideline shot-caller doesn’t have to be a big name, but he needs someone who can contribute efficiently to the Raptors’ cause. Here are some potential targets.

Kelly Olynyk

Kelly Olynyk has quietly had a good season with most failing to take notice.

He has been doing his share for the Houston Rockets, averaging 18.9 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 3.7 assists in 31.7 minutes of action.

Olynyk is set to become an unrestricted free agent and could be a good pickup for Nurse.

Richaun Holmes

Plugging in the middle, Richaun Holmes could be worth a try for Toronto.

He has done well at center for the Sacramento Kings, averaging 14.4 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 1.7 assists in 29.5 minutes of action.

Holmes costs a bit more than Olynyk but may continue his rise in a Raptors uniform.

Daniel Theis

Nurse has been known to love role players, making Daniel Theis a worthy consideration.

His offense may need work, but all that could change if he were given a chance by Toronto.

This season, he has managed to produce 9.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.7 assists in 65 games, splitting his time with the Boston Celtics and Chicago Bulls.

A move to Toronto could benefit Theis who could unleash his true potential, particularly on the offensive end.

The 29-year-old could be a viable option if the Raptors fail to latch on to either Olynyk or Holmes.
