KEY POINTS

  • The Warriors' rumored interest in Kelly Oubre comes with risks
  • Oubre could be a backup plan for Andrew Wiggins
  • But the Phoenix Suns small forward could be too pricey for the Warriors to take in

The Golden State Warriors have lots of options to strengthen up for next season. The Dubs are in line to pick a young talented star in the 2020 NBA Draft and have a $17.2 million trade exception to further bolster their roster. Kelly Oubre Jr. of the Phoenix Suns has also been mentioned, though there are risks involved.

Looking at his career numbers, there is no denying that Oubre is on the rise. He has improved immensely since arriving in Phoenix. In 56 games last season, the 6-foot-7 forward averaged 18.7 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 34.5 minutes of action. Without question, those are contributions that Steve Kerr and the company would welcome.

This could be one of the reasons why the Warriors are believed to be interested in considering the 15th overall pick of the 2015 NBA Draft. He could be the guy Golden State will take in via its trade exception privilege, ESPN's Nick Friedell said Wednesday on "The Jump."

But Oubre owns a $14 million salary for the 2020-21 season, so there are some who are not too comfortable with the idea.

Most know that the Warriors are open to trading away the second-overall pick if the offer is right. A straight swap with Oubre for that is unlikely to get it done, meaning there must be players and other assets involved.

Also worth noting for the Warriors is that Oubre recently underwent arthroscopic surgery for the torn meniscus in his right knee, NBA.com reported. Though he seems to be recovering well, it remains that his true potential may not be immediately seen this 2020-21 season. Hence, the Dubs would have to be patient with his progress as Oubre gets himself back to shape if the move happens.

Finally, there is a question if this would in any way affect Andrew Wiggins. Acquired last season, the former top pick has already shown what he can do with the Dubs, though questions remain regarding how long the Warriors can manage his hefty deal.

Wiggins has three years left in that pact where he is owed about $95 million. He will earn $29.5 million this 2020-21 season, per Spotrac.

Talented as he may be, not all agree that Wiggins deserves the expensive deal. Should they take in Oubre, would the Dubs dangle the Canadian to other teams to make salary room? In a way that makes sense, but there are risks involved that will have to be taken into consideration.
