Former Los Angeles Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves star Michael Beasley once shared a worrisome message months before his new alarming post on Instagram that had fans worried.
After testing positive for the coronavirus, Beasley raised a couple of red flags by suggesting that he has been “feeling suicidal” lately in one of his recent Instagram stories. But this was apparently not the first time that Beasley has alarmed fans by seemingly alluding to having suicidal thoughts.
The 31-year-old NBA veteran, who has played for several teams, lost his mother, Fatima Smith, to cancer on Dec. 23. Exactly 68 days after Smith passed away, Beasley posted a photo of him and his mother and said he was still mourning her death.
“Honestly, I’ve grown to hate so much and so many people since you’ve left,” he wrote in the post. “I can’t seem to shake the feeling of being alone, you don’t know how bad you hurt me mommy. I know that’s selfish but I don’t like it here anymore…..I’ll see you soon I promise #day68.”
On Saturday, Beasley shocked his followers when he shared lyrics of American rapper YNW Melly's song “Suicidal,” which said: “Lately I’ve been feeling suicidal.”
NBA-oriented Twitter page Top Ball Coverage posted a screenshot of Beasley’s post and urged people around the league to check on the player.
“Prayers up for Michael Beasley...get better King,” one fan wrote.
“Hope Michael Beasley is alright,” another fan said.
Beasley later said on Instagram that it was just “a good song and a badly timed screenshot,” Total Pro Sports reported.
Beasley was signed by the Brooklyn Nets on July 10. He was all set for the NBA restart, but after testing positive for COVID-19, the Nets decided to release him and free up his spot on the roster.
In a span of 12 years, Beasley has already played for seven different teams in the NBA. He had his best season with the Minnesota Timberwolves, where he averaged 19 points per game.
Last season, Beasley teamed up with LeBron James and the Lakers but was only given limited playing time. Prior to the restart, Beasley hit his career-low in points, recording only seven points per game.
The NBA has yet to release an official statement about Beasley’s health condition.
