KEY POINTS

  • Clippers could acquire Young by trade deadline
  • Nunn could be a key acquisition this summer
  • Clippers don't need to make immediate roster changes

The Los Angeles Clippers seem to be doing fine right now with a 31-14 win-loss record in the NBA Western Conference. Regardless, this does not mean that head coach Doc Rivers is not open to beefing up his roster.

The NBA trade deadline is on Feb. 6, meaning there is still time for the Clips to pull off a trade. And according to the Chicago Sun-Times, the team has its eyes on two Chicago Bulls players: Thaddeus Young and Kris Dunn.

"Sources have indicated that the Los Angeles Clippers have interest in both, but they could go after Young in a trade, and wait for Dunn, who is a restricted free agent this summer," said Joe Cowley in the report.

The interest in Young hardly comes as a surprise. In fact, in a previous post, it was already mentioned how the Clips were interested in getting the 12th overall pick of the 2007 NBA Draft. But for that to happen, Rivers needs to give up some assets. A name mentioned at the time was Maurice Harkless, though he is five years younger than Young. The 6-foot-7 forward is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Young could provide the Clips with better defense and bigger production. In 45 games this season, the 31-year-old power forward has averaged 9.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.7 assists. He is also shooting 34.5-percent from beyond the arc. If a deal is struck, Young will likely play behind Kawhi Leonard and Paul George.

As for Nunn, the 25-year-old guard has been often mentioned in NBA trade rumors. But it appears a lot has changed with the 5th overall pick of the 2016 NBA Draft accepting a diminished role. Dunn's attitude has drawn the admiration of head coach Jim Boylen, MSN.com reported.

“All 30 teams are looking for a guy who takes a role and runs with it. Nobody is expecting you to always like your situation, but your job is to do your role … I think it’s a great example to the league," said Boylen.

This season, Nunn has played in 46 games averaging 7.3 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 3.3 assists. He becomes a restricted free agent in 2020 per Spotrac.

If not by the NBA trade deadline, the Clippers could pursue Nunn in the summer. This could explain why they sent a scout to watch young play, NBC Sports Chicago reported. He could be a vital addition right now but only if the opportunity allows it for the Clips.
