KEY POINTS

  • Heat could be immediate contenders with Aldridge and DeRozan
  • Spurs need to decide on their path this NBA season
  • Heat can unload high-salaried stars for Aldridge and DeRozan

The Miami Heat have already surprised many but it appears the South Beach squad is not content on surpassing expectations. Aware that the team is probably one or two NBA stars short, Miami is reportedly interested in LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMar DeRozan of the San Antonio Spurs.

According to Shandel Richardson of Sports Illustrated, the Heat have shown interest in the Spurs veteran duo. The two players could be the final pieces needed by team president Pat Riley and head coach Erik Spoelstra as they ramp up their roster for the coming NBA postseason wars.

Looking at the NBA standings, the Heat are running second behind the Milwaukee Bucks in the Eastern Conference with a 30-13 win-loss card. The Spurs, on the other hand, are 19-23, good for the 9th spot. San Antonio is still in the hunt for a playoff spot although they risk facing one of the top seeds out West.

In a previous post, it was mentioned how the Heat would be a dangerous team to deal with right now. They have been successful with Jimmy Butler at the helm paired with their young core compose of Kendrick Nunn, Duncan Robinson and Tyler Herro. Riley has been known to make major moves that have been key to any NBA team's success. Though most saw that coming this summer, there is no reason why Miami cannot pull it off at this stage if the opportunity is there.

For the Spurs, it all depends on the team's outlook. Both DeRozan and Aldridge have two years remaining in their respective contracts with the Spurs. Of the two, however, DeRozan has a player option that he could exercise. Rather than risk losing him, the possibility of trading him now for some assets would be feasible for head coach Gregg Popovich.

Of the two, acquiring Aldridge seems to make more sense. As mentioned in another post, Aldridge could form a formidable frontline with Bam Adebayo. Aldridge has shown what he can do on offense but Spoelstra's defensive side would get a big upgrade.

The Heat can offer several players on their end. That includes Dion Waiters, James Johnson, Kelly Olynyk and Goran Dragic. These are the same players holding lucrative deals, something that the Spurs will likely study first before anything else.
