NBA Trade Rumors: Kyle Lowry Could Reunite With Kawhi Leonard In LA
The Toronto Raptors may have inked Kyle Lowry to a one-year extension but there is no closure in this move. All the defending NBA champions did was to make sure the 33-year-old was secure until 2021. However, it does not take out the possibility of seeing the five-time All-Star moving out of Toronto. Should that happen, the Los Angeles Clippers and the Minnesota Timberwolves are said to be interested in getting him.
Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN learned that the Raptors signed Lowry because it would be easy to trade him under contract. Aside from the Clippers and the Timberwolves, the Miami Heat and the Detroit Pistons could also show interest. Of the teams mentioned, seeing Lowry join the Clippers is something that would spell bad news to all NBA teams.
Already formidable with the duo of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, adding Lowry could make the Clips even more dangerous. Also, it would be a reunion for Leonard and Lowry. Both were instrumental for the Raptors' first NBA title. Nothing could be sweeter than joining forces one more and delivering another NBA title for the Clips.
The three other teams could benefit immensely with Lowry on board. The veteran guard could hit it well with Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins over in Minnesota. The T-Wolves need a good veteran leader and snagging Lowry makes a lot of sense. The same holds true for the Heat and the Pistons.
Right now, all these are possibilities. The Raptors may or may not pull the trigger on a potential Lowry trade. It all depends on how they perform with Leonard no longer around. Some feel that they remain competitive if they want to make it back-to-back titles.
However, the case of the Raptors goes beyond Lowry. The reality is that most of its veterans are likely to leave by the end of the 2019-20 season. Marc Gasol, Serge Ibaka, and Fred VanVleet have expiring deals. Critics suggest that the Raptors will tank for the coming season and give younger players more exposure, NBC Sports reported. That cue for that is when (and if) the Raptors do ship Lowry to another NBA team.
