NBA Trade Rumors: Warriors Interest In Rockets Guard Fizzles; Asking Price Too Steep
KEY POINTS
- The Warriors are moving on from Victor Oladipo due to the steep asking price of the Rockets
- Oladipo could still end up with either the Miami Heat or New York Knicks
- Oladipo is set to become a free agent after this season, making him a risky investment with no promise
The Golden State Warriors are looking for help, but it appears they may have to veer their attention somewhere else.
Word was ripe that the Dubs were interested in Victor Oladipo, but it seems those plans are now shelved.
According to a report from Anthony Slater of The Athletic, the Warriors are no longer contemplating a potential deal with the Rockets allegedly asking too much for the two-time All-Star guard.
It was not detailed on what Houston was exactly asking for Oladipo.
Despite the adversity tied to Oladipo, the second overall pick of the 2013 NBA Draft has been performing well for the Rockets this season.
In 27 games, he has averaged 20.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 4.7 assists. He also owns a good shooting clip, 40.6% from the field and 33.2% from beyond the arc.
Oladipo could have been a big boost to the charges of Warriors head coach Steve Kerr. Stephen Curry has been carrying the heavy load in scoring and backcourt chores with Klay Thompson still out.
To compound their misery, the Warriors could also be looking at Curry missing a bit of time due to injury as well after falling hard on his back in the game versus the Rockets on Wednesday.
However, getting the 28-year-old was also a risk considering he is set to become a free agent after the 2020-21 NBA season.
Aside from that, there is no assurance that the Warriors’ chances in the NBA postseason would improve.
Weighing all that, getting Oladipo at an undisclosed but likely outrageous price may be an investment that the Dubs could save for another day.
With the Dubs backing out, other teams considering him could have better chances. The Miami Heat are seen as the ideal destination, mostly because they have the young players that the Rockets are seeking.
Alternatively, there is also the New York Knicks who need a veteran player to help boost the franchise's campaign.
But as mentioned earlier, a big question here is the contract of Oladipo. Any team getting the All-Star guard may have to settle for a rental that holds no promise since he is bound for free agency.
With the Heat and the Knicks, it may or may not work for the current NBA season. But if they or any other teams have plans beyond the 2020-21 NBA season of locking in Oladipo, a trade could make sense if the 28-year-old guard is amenable to it.
