A recent tweet from NBC News has led to the network being slammed on Twitter after they referred to the current “Jeopardy!” champion as a "lesbian tutor."

Mattea Roach, 23, is set to win a Jeopardy! grand prize total of $396,182 as of Wednesday, after winning 17 consecutive games.

On Monday, NBC News tweeted "The 23-year-old lesbian tutor from Toronto has amassed a total of $320,081, the most by a Canadian contestant in 'Jeopardy!' history."

The tweet went along with an article that was titled "Mattea Roach becomes latest LGBTQ ‘Jeopardy!’ phenom."

NBC News has not removed the tweet or the article as of Thursday.

However, many felt it was unnecessary for the network to refer to Roach's sexual orientation, as it wasn't a necessary part of telling her story.

Shortly after the tweet was posted, many people started to respond with concern over NBC News's choice of wording.

"Is her sexual orientation really relevant here? " one user wrote. While some other comments included, "This is such a weird tweet," and "Agreed… the wording is so horrible."

Multiple other Twitter users responded to the tweet asking the network to "do better" and pointing out that "highlighting someone's sexuality" is a "thing of the past."
