The new North Carolina Tar Heels head coach has become a hot subject on the internet.
On Monday, the University of North Carolina men’s basketball officially announced that Hubert Davis will be the team’s new head coach, replacing the now-retired Roy Williams. This makes him the first Black head coach of the program.
During a recent press conference, Davis was pressed to comment about the matter and pointed out that “it is significant” to become part of North Carolina’s sporting history given that few Black people have been appointed head coach in the famed university and college basketball in general.
However, it was Davis’ comment about his wife and family that caught the attention of some college basketball followers, who deemed the 50-year-old to be defensive when no one seemed to be questioning his interracial marriage.
“It is significant,” Davis said of being the first Black head coach of Tar Heels. “It is significant that I’m African-American and I’m the head coach here. I know that in terms of Division one head coaches all around the country only 26% of Division one head coaches of men’s basketball are compromised by minorities specifically African-Americans. I know that it is significant that I’m fourth African-American head coach in any sport in the University of North Carolina.”
“I’m very proud to be an African-American,” he continued. “But I’m also very proud that my wife is white. And I’m very proud that my three beautiful, unbelievable kids are combination of both of us.”
In a series of tweets compiled by Awesemo.com, some Twitter users quoted Davis’ statement and used it as a response to random questions that had nothing to do with his wife’s race, intending to poke fun at the former NBA journeyman.
"Sports Media: Thank you for joining the UNC Basketball Team. Hubert Davis: I have a white wife," a fan wrote.
"Cashier: 'Would you like a bag?' Hubert Davis: 'I’m very proud that my wife is white,'" political analyst and columnist Jason Nichols tweeted.
North Carolina athletic director Bubba Cunningham, meanwhile, insisted that after a series of evaluations, he always came up with Davis as the best person for the job.
"You've got to be sure you got the right person,” Cunningham told 247sports.com of Davis’ hiring. “I mean, these are really hard jobs. And you're representing the University of North Carolina, this basketball program."
"And there's a significant responsibility that I have, and that the coach has," he continued. "So I want to make sure I was right in recommending somebody to the chancellor and to the board."
