“NCIS: New Orleans” Season 5 is ending tonight, but it isn’t goodbye forever. The CBS drama has been renewed for Season 6.

The series was renewed, along with “NCIS: Los Angeles,”at the end of April. “Both shows have been key pillars to the CBS schedule for several years,” Kelly Kahl, president of CBS Entertainment, said in a press release. “They offer heroic stories, big stars and have attracted a passionate, loyal fan base. We’re excited to have Chris [O’Donnell], LL [Cool J], Scott [Bakula] and these terrific casts back to bring more terrific NCIS stories to viewers in the U.S. and around the world.”

In addition to Bakula, “NCIS: New Orleans” also stars Lucas Black, CCH Pounder, Vanessa Ferlito, Rob Kerkovich, Daryl “Chill” Mitchell and Necar Zadegan.

The ratings for “NCIS: New Orleans” have mostly held steady over Season 5. According to TV Series Finale, the spinoff is averaging 7.3 million viewers each week with 0.79 in the 18-49 demographic. That’s similar to “NCIS: Los Angeles,” which averages 7.18 million viewers overall with 0.83 in the demo. The spinoffs don’t quite match the mothership, though. “NCIS” is averaging 12.12 viewers a week with 1.23 in the demographic.

CBS announced that the show will maintain its timeslot on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. EDT, after “NCIS” and “FBI,” when Season 6 premieres in the fall.

Bakula hopes Season 6 will bring in another storyline with Pride’s mom. Joanna Cassidy plays the family matriarch, and the actor teased her importance in the finale.

“She’s kind of the missing link for Pride in terms of his heart and his heartbreak, and we’re going to use her in a very unusual way,” Bakula told TV Insider. “But hopefully there’ll be more after this season with her and again, the road to finding his mother really opened up when he lost his dad. All these things kind of snowball and affect each other. I think it’s been good storytelling, and I think the audience is going to be really surprised and delighted by her, for sure.”

The Season 5 finale of “NCIS: New Orleans” airs Tuesday at 10 p.m. EDT on CBS.
