Police in Fostoria, Ohio, are alerting parents to check their children's candy for anything that seems tampered with, after a sewing needle was found in a Kit-Kat candy bar from a trick-or-treating event for Halloween.

“Why….why would anyone do this? We’ve all heard of these types of things happening, but to actually have someone do this in our community is truly disturbing! This sewing needle was located by an observant child who reported receiving it after Trick-or-Treating,” police wrote in a statement on Sunday.

A photo of a sharp needle poking out of the wrapper, along with a picture of a split open Kit-Kat, revealed a large needle penetrating throughout the whole candy bar on the police department's Facebook page. If swallowed the needle could cause choking or internal damage.

Police are unsure as to the exact location of where the child received the candy but are working on investigating to find out who put children in danger that night.

“Although we only are aware of 2 pieces of candy being involved, we take this seriously and are appalled that anyone would be so demented as to want to hurt children in our community,” said Chief Keith Loreno.

Incidents involving "tampered-with candy" are uncommon, but as long as Halloween candy is around and children will be eating it for the next few weeks, it’s important to keep being aware of these situations in mind.
