Neil Druckmann: DLC Not In The Plans For ‘The Last of Us Part 2
KEY POINTS
- "The Last of Us Part 2" game director Neil Druckmann clarified that the game will not receive a story DLC
- The existence of a multiplayer mode coming to the game, however, wasn't confirmed nor denied
- The financial success enjoyed by the game has defied criticism of its lacking features so far
Neil Druckmann, the director for “The Last of Us Part 2,” said that there are no clear plans for a DLC. This was captured when the director was present for Kinda Funny Gamescast's spoilercast. The director said that the next game will not follow the example of the original, which received a story DLC.
According to IGN, the director further answered “no” when asked about the possibility of a game DLC. He said that, when 'The Last of Us' was the game on focus, a season pass was released ahead of time – it was a sign that that game was getting a DLC story. There are no plans for that currently, according to Druckmann.
The director’s answers, however, did not include whether or not there will be a multiplayer version of the game. In the original, there was a “Factions mode” which enabled players to play with or against each other as part of the game’s factions. There are reports that this will be released in some form or another – possibly as a standalone game.
That doesn’t seem to stop people from buying the story. According to CNET, “The Last of Us Part 2” managed to sell 4 million units in a week, besting other games such as “Marvel’s Spider-Man,” “Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End” and “God of War.”
The game follows the exploits of the immune heroine, Ellie and Joel, who are now a grizzled smuggler. Set four years after they first traveled across the country, the characters are running away from gangs, militias and other survivors that were driven to the brink of desperation.
The game is also set against the backdrop of a pandemic, where people are infected and taken over by a fungus that latches itself into their brains and disfigures their bodies.
This financial success rode the wave of people turning to video games for entertainment in the face of lockdowns because of the real-world pandemic. Not even internet hate, nor the lack of features like multiplayer and a DLC, has made any dent on the sales figures made by the game.
