Witcher Release Date
"The Witcher" will likely be released in December on Netflix. Netflix

With the release of Disney+ and HBO Max on the horizon, Netflix is gearing up to take on the behemoths of the streaming wars. On Twitter Wednesday night, Netflix shared a new 22-second long teaser for their upcoming “The Witcher” series.

Though little was revealed in the footage, aside from the news of a new trailer dropping on Thursday, it’s clear Netflix knows exactly what it’s doing by drip-feeding fans information to build up the anticipation for its Dec. 16 red carpet premiere and potential series release the following day.

Starring Henry Cavil as Geralt of Rivia, the show will focus heavily on the tri-relationship between him, the sorceress Yennefer (Anya Chalotra), and the princess Ciri (Freya Allen).

The streaming service released its first look at Cavil as The Witcher last October. It only seems fitting a brand-new trailer be dropped on the anniversary of the reveal, and on Halloween, no less, so long as it is filled with a slew of new scenes and (hopefully) plenty more beasts. The recent photos released by Netflix exemplified how the show would not only be dark and gritty, but fantastical, possibly surpassing its “Game of Thrones” rival with a myriad of action and stakes.

While the series is all about monster-hunting, it’s often more so the humans that are the real creatures in Andrzej Sapkowski’s classic novels. “The Last Wish,” which is the main text fueling the Netflix show, details the reasoning behind Geralt’s title of The Butcher of Blaviken. The short story, “The Lesser Evil,” constructs this very nature of good and evil in light of what it means to be human.

It’s unclear what time exactly the new trailer will be released on Thursday by Netflix, though it will surely lend credence to the show's official air date. One thing's for certain: this new dark fantasy will be a thrill ride, proving that no one wants to mess with Cavil when wielding a sword.
