'Never Seen Him In That Type Of Shape,' Says Cardinals Coach About Kyler Murray's Injury
KEY POINTS
- Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray was carted off the field in their Week 14 loss
- Murray appears to have torn his ACL as his knee buckled while making a routine run
- Head coach Kliff Kingsbury is not optimistic about Murray's outlook for the rest of the season
The Arizona Cardinals suffered two losses on Monday, December 12– one to the New England Patriots and a potentially season-ending injury to quarterback Kyler Murray.
Head coach Kliff Kingsbury spoke with the media following the Week 14 defeat and was inevitably asked about Murray's status.
"We're just kind of asking about what was going on from the medical staff and honestly, it didn't look good. I've never seen him in that type of shape, so I assume it isn't good," Kingsbury said.
The Cardinals had just started their opening drive of the game and Murray scrambled out of the pocket in the hopes of picking up decent yards on their third play of the game, facing first down and 10 yards.
As Murray faked right and went left to avoid a waiting Matthew Judon ready to stop his progress, Murray collapsed onto the ground by himself with the Patriots linebacker calling on the Arizona sideline to come help him.
A hush fell in the State Farm Stadium as they waited for Murray to get back up to his feet, but it soon became evident that he would not be doing so and was eventually carted off the field with the fans showering him with applause for the work that he has done this season.
Non-contact injuries, regardless of sport, is as scary as it can be as it could mean a couple of things, though most fans would associate it being a torn muscle or ligament.
Based on Murray's extremely dejected reaction and how his kneecap buckled, it is extremely likely that the former Oklahoma Sooner suffered an ACL tear in his right knee.
Murray was initially listed as questionable to return to the game, but was later ruled out of the game at the end of the first quarter.
With backup quarterback Colt McCoy running the show in Murray's absence, the Cardinals fought their hardest to get the win, though the Patriots were simply too talented to overcome and marked Arizona's ninth loss of the season and their sixth in their home field.
"It's not an issue of guys not playing hard or 'am I ready to play', it's just as a group we've got to buckle down and play well together, practice well together and finish these last four games out one at a time. That would be my focus," McCoy mentioned as quoted by USA Today.
The Cardinals' schedule does not get any easier in the last four games of the season as the face the Denver Broncos, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Atlanta Falcons and a season-closer against the San Francisco 49ers.
Losing Murray after having just signed his five-year, $230.5 million extension is a tough blow to a front office that had full belief in him and his ability to carry them into the future.
